My Pita - The Only Israeli Restaurant in Town

As an only child, I can relate to living in a world free of competition. Sure, it has the potential to weaken the spirit and drive a person's drive into oblivion. But, living outside of the competitive realm also removes undue pressures and alleviates all fears of failure since, after all, you win just by showing up.
The same could be said of My Pita - Houston's only Israeli restaurant. Perhaps they succeed in their culinary efforts by the sheer fact that they are here. In a town of 9,000 taco joints, it is a nice diversion. However, after one bite of their shawarma (slightly different than the Arabic version which is more predominantely known), it is clear that they do more than just make an appearance at the table. My Pita means business. And their food makes that known.
Typical shwarmas are just slow roasted meat served in a warm pita. Simple. But this version was so much more. They threw in eggplant, hummus, red onions, chicken and a whole lot of flavor in a way that made their Arab cousins weaken in the knees. Perhaps Middle East peace deals could be created over meals like these...or, possibly, their spats spring forth from the idea that one shawarma could be better than another?!
Regardless, no matter which side of the debate you are on, it is definitely worth trying...if only to have something different than the usual enchilada or chain restaurant meal!
